Indianapolis, IN – 11 Jan 2007 – ThirtySix Software, LLC today announced the availability of SmartDocs Standard Edition. The first in a suite of products, SmartDocs adds powerful content management and reuse capabilities to Microsoft Word previously only available in high-end and costly XML authoring solutions.

The Difficulty of Managing Content

If your organization is like most, nearly 80% of your content is unstructured. Your important business information is spread across documents on hard drives, LAN areas and web sites throughout your company.

As a result, creating and maintaining documentation within your organization can be a significant challenge. Authoring new content is often redundant and inefficient. Existing documentation often contains inconsistent or out-of-date information and documentation updates require manual processes that are time consuming and error prone.

As the size and demands on your organization grow, so does your need to develop and manage content more effectively. In order to stay ahead of your competition, you need a smarter way of working.

Introducing SmartDocs Standard Edition

Empower your content authors with SmartDocs – an easy-to-use, powerful authoring solution that makes writing and reusing your organization's content easy and efficient. SmartDocs Standard Edition integrates the benefits of content reuse directly into your Microsoft Word authoring environment, bringing the benefits of reuse to your authors while minimizing the costs associated with implementation, training, and user acceptance.

Using SmartDocs, your organization can take advantage of a variety of powerful content reuse techniques to streamline the creation and modification of your documentation. For example, authors can utilize reusable text to reduce your organization's reliance on the inefficient and error prone task of using search-and-replace to update commonly used text. In addition, authors can take advantage of conditional text to author multiple variations of content within a single document, resulting in a reduction in the amount of documentation your organization needs to manage.

SmartDocs Standard Edition is the first step in taking control of your unstructured content and optimizing your organization's documentation processes. Empower your content authors with the benefits of content reuse today!.

Why Should My Organization Care About Content Reuse?

Great question – one that we get quite often.

Instead of rehashing some of the great articles out there that already cover this topic, we decided we'd just point you to a couple of our favorites. These articles are quick, easy reads that illustrate why content reuse is a good thing and how it can provide substantial ROI for nearly any organization.

These two articles are just a couple of our favorites. We'll post links to more of our favorites in the coming weeks.

Coming Soon – Office 2007

Chances are if you're reading our blog, then you're already well aware that Office 2007 is coming. Below we've addressed many of the common questions we've heard people asking about Office 2007 and its impact on SmartDocs.

  • When is Office 2007 being released?

Office 2007 has already been released to volume licensing customers (i.e., large organizations). Microsoft will make Office 2007 available to the general public at the end of January 2007.

  • What's new in Office 2007?

Microsoft's What's new in the 2007 release page does a great job at outlining the new functionality in each of the Office 2007 products.

In our evaluation of Office 2007, we identified three changes in Office that really make it stand out from its predecessors:

    • New user interface paradigm. The traditional menu-and-toolbar interface has been replaced with a context-sensitive ribbon and tabs.
    • XML based file formats. By default, documents created in Office 2007 are based on the new Office OpenXML file format.
    • Focus on collaboration. Office 2007 collaboration tools like SharePoint and Groove are tightly integrated with traditional Office applications making collaboration easier and more powerful than ever.
  • Why the new user interface in Office 2007?

This series of eight blog entries from Jensen Harris (Group Program Manager for the Microsoft Office User Experience Team) explains in great detail why Microsoft moved away from the tradition menu-and-toolbar interface for Office 2007:

  • How does Word 2007 impact SmartDocs?

SmartDocs is fully embracing the release of Word 2007. SmartDocs will provide full support for both Office 2003 and Office 2007, with no fear of incompatibilites between the different versions.

The SmartDocs user interface will be adaptive to both Word 2003 and Word 2007. That is, when running SmartDocs in Word 2003, SmartDocs will utilize traditional menus and toolbars. When running SmartDocs in Word 2007, SmartDocs will take advantage of the new Office ribbon and tabs. In addition, SmartDocs for Word 2007 will take advantage of some of the newer capabilities in Word 2007 to make the user experience even richer than before.
